I was born into beauty. As a third-generation entrepreneur in a pioneering Black haircare family, I grew up surrounded by hair icons and fashionistas who shaped an industry and set trends across generations. But even with that legacy, nothing prepared me for what it felt like to lose my own hair.

Hair loss runs in my family. I carry the genetic history of thinning and shedding, and when stress, motherhood, and lifestyle were added on top of it — the reality hit harder than I ever imagined.

For the first three years of my life as a single mother, stress wreaked havoc on my body. I ignored the early signs — the thinning, the shedding — because I didn’t have the time or energy to deal with it. I reached for quick fixes, hoping they would solve the problem, but they never did.

One month before my wedding — one of the happiest and hardest chapters of my life — I began losing my edges. I remember looking in the mirror thinking, “Already? Now?” The day before my wedding, we did everything possible to disguise the receding hairline, pulling off what felt like miracles just to get me down the aisle. On the outside, I was preparing for one of the most beautiful days of my life. On the inside, I was consumed with frustration. The fear hadn’t fully set in yet, but I couldn’t escape the thought: How could I be losing my hair so early in life — and on one of the most exciting days of my life?

After I got married and had my second child, everything escalated. The shedding became worse, and frustration slowly gave way to fear and shame. I remember thinking, “Is it too late to fix this?” Sitting in the doctor’s office, I heard the words I dreaded: “Some of this may be irreversible. Would you like to try a prescription to see if it helps?” My heart sank. But I knew that wasn’t the path for me. That wasn’t the ethos I wanted to live by.

Instead, I made a decision. I leaned into nutrition, hydration, movement, stress management, and targeted nutrients. I committed to learning, studying, and creating a system that not only worked for me but could also help others like me.

That commitment gave birth to NU Standard Beauty.

A brand built on:

  • Science-backed ingredients only. No gimmicks, no empty promises. If it isn’t proven, it doesn’t belong.

  • A system I live by. These are the same products and principles I use every single day.

  • Commitment to people, planet, and your pocketbook. Because true beauty should never come at the expense of health, sustainability, or affordability.

  • Partnership with professionals. I knew this couldn’t be done alone, so I worked with stylists and created the Hydrasilk Reconstructive System — bringing inside-out wellness together with expert salon care.

Today, NU Standard Beauty is more than a brand. It’s a movement for BUSY QUEENS™ everywhere — women who are juggling work, family, and life but still want healthy hair without the hassle.

My story is personal, but it’s not unique. If you’ve ever felt the stress, fear, or shame of losing your hair, I’ve been there. And I built NU Standard so you don’t have to face it alone.

This is about more than hair. It’s about health, confidence, and creating a NU Standard for beauty — one that starts from the inside out.
