The 10 Insider Secrets to Healthy Hair Every Busy Queen Should Know

Healthy textured and chemically treated hair

They don’t teach hair maintenance outside of beauty school, but doesn’t everyone deserve to know how to grow long, strong, healthy hair? We ALL have hair, don’t we? Black women are incredibly blessed with a texture that requires a little more love, so we’ve put together this list because you deserve to know these 10 insider secrets to growing long, healthy hair.

  1. Diet - You are what you eat! Healthy Queen = Healthy Hair. Vitamin deficiencies and inflammation may delay or deter hair growth, but you can always take a supplement if you notice excess shedding and slow hair growth. We recommend our Take N Go™ Daily Hair Vitamins for longer, stronger, healthier hair.
  2. Get your hair trimmed regularly Once your hair splits, it will just keep splitting up the hair shaft, and the longer you wait to trim it off, the more you will need to cut. For healthy ends, we recommend getting your hair trimmed every 4-6 weeks.
  3. Exercise - Hair only grows when there is blood flow to healthy hair follicles, and exercise is a great way to improve circulation. And don’t worry, you don’t need to run a marathon--yoga counts.
  4. Shampoo often - Healthy hair can only grow from a healthy scalp. If you have follicles clogged with product or debris, the hair will not grow properly. We recommend shampooing every 4 days, even when wearing braids, weaves, and wigs.
  5. Condition ends often The ends of your hair are the oldest and have experienced the most during their lifetime. When conditioning, focus more on the ends of the hair.
  6. Limit Stress - In addition to promoting disease within the body, stress can wreak havoc on our tresses. When our body releases cortisol, the stress hormone causes degradation of the hair follicles, disrupting healthy hair growth.
  7. Less manipulation = less damage - The textured hair that African American women are blessed with is very delicate. We are susceptible to breakage at every bend in a strand since this is the weakest part of our hair. But the less time we spend playing with those bends, the more time we have to be game-changers in the world with damage-free hair, so that’s a win for us.
  8. Massage your scalp - Scalp massage is a great way to get the blood flowing to your follicles to promote hair growth. And doesn’t it feel good? Listen to what your body likes.
  9. Sleep on satin pillowcases - For the nights when you wish to go bonnet-free, sleep on a satin pillowcase to prevent breakage in the night--especially those who frequently toss and turn in their sleep.
  10. Protect your ends - Hair does well when it can avoid the elements. We recommend hairstyles that don’t allow your ends to brush against your clothing too much. Less friction = less damage (Check out this post on protective styles)
We hope these tips will help you reach your hair growth goals, and we hope you spread them to the women you love. Be kind to your body; be kind to your mind; be kind to your hair. You deserve it all!
