Sex Wellness is Hair Wellness

Sex Wellness is Hair Wellness

Let’s talk about sex. Are you getting enough?
Here’s why it matters: We firmly believe the first step to hair wellness is nourishing the beauty within. While our favorite way to feed the hair from the inside out is through diet, your activity level also plays a vital role in how well different systems within the body function. So when it comes to sex, we suggest lots of consensual, healthy activity with plenty of orgasms for optimum hair growth and wellness.

But why?

The truth is, frequent orgasms are beneficial to circulation and blood flow for healthy hair growth, and they help reduce inflammation helping to prevent hair loss.

So let’s talk about how.

It all comes down to those chemicals in our bodies called hormones. While your body is experiencing the intense pleasure of orgasm (and shortly after), your brain releases oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin, adrenaline, and noradrenaline, among a few other chemicals. This chemical cocktail will help you feel pleasure/satisfaction, love, connection, a rush of energy, and a simultaneous desire to nap.

So, what do those hormones do individually?

Oxytocin is the primary hormone that facilitates uterine contractions for childbirth and helps the transport of milk during breastfeeding. It is known as the love hormone for its ability to help us feel love and connection. It is also released during exercise, while listening to music, singing in a group, and while cuddling/physical touch. The most significant amounts are released during orgasm and childbirth to help minimize pain, reduce inflammation, help move food along the digestive tract, and reduce mental stress. Low levels of oxytocin are associated with depression and anxiety.

Dopamine is the chemical that helps us feel pleasure and satisfaction. Low dopamine levels are linked to mental stress, depression, muscle stiffness, digestion issues, schizophrenia, and psychosis, while too much dopamine may cause impulsiveness, competitiveness, and aggressive behavior.  High levels of dopamine are released during orgasm, as well as after accomplishing goals, eating healthy, and practicing gratitude. So if your body feels out of balance or mentally stressed, an orgasm will help you out.

Serotonin is the feel-good chemical that improves mood and sleep, protects gut and bone health, and promotes wound healing. Most serotonin is found in the stomach, but the brain releases a little after an orgasm helping you feel satisfied and maybe even a little sleepy. Conversely, low serotonin levels are associated with mental health disorders, sleep disorders, and digestive disorders.

Adrenaline (also called epinephrine) is the hormone released during our fight or flight response for survival, but it also is responsible for those infamous butterflies in the stomach. An adrenaline rush from sex (especially sex involving the fear of getting caught) can help us feel heightened attraction to our partner and increase our blood flow. Increased blood flow means more nutrients are transported to the hair follicles to boost growth. However, both too much and too little adrenaline can cause stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

Noradrenaline (also known as norepinephrine) is a hormone released during a fight or flight response that can cause euphoria. When combined with serotonin, it acts as a natural anti-depressant. Too little noradrenaline is associated with mental health disorders, poor concentration, and low energy. Too much can cause high blood pressure and panic attacks.

All hormones released during orgasm work in tandem to create a healthy, all-natural anti-depressant. Orgasms are thus beneficial for promoting mental wellness and reducing inflammation. Stress and inflammation can cause hair to shed prematurely, while the natural dose of chemicals through (and immediately after) an orgasm can promote healthy hair growth.

So the answer is yes. Sexual wellness can improve your hair wellness by promoting mental health, boosting your circulation, and aiding healthy digestion. Healthy digestion means your body can absorb more of the nutrients you consume, and better circulation means your scalp stays nourished to remain in the growing phase of hair growth for as long as possible.

While orgasms are quite the pick me up, don’t feel pressured to partner with someone solely for your hair health suddenly. The same benefits apply to orgasms through masturbation, with the added benefit of an increased sense of self-love. Masturbation also helps you learn what you like so that when that partner finally comes along, achieving an orgasm through intimacy will be less of a challenge. So cheers to lots of “Big O’s” in your future for optimum hair wellness! You deserve it.
